You can run, you can hide, but now you will never be away from an advertisement. The usual beep of an SMS will now be frequent when you cross roads, enter malls or even shopping centres like the Sector 17 plaza. The beeps would offer discounts, inform you about sales, fairs et at. Simultaneously, telecom subscribers in the region may get the incentive of free SMS or reduced tariff, In exchange of having advertisement inserted into the text messages.

"It is a race of who captures the imagination of a user first. Advertisements on mobile phone leads to spontaneous action from the user, unlike print and electronic media," said Dheeraj Aggarwal. founder CEO of Shimla-based Altruist Technology. The company is providing value-added services (VAS) to Airtel, Idea and Reliance and is working on a project enabling users to get offers from locations where they are currently positioned.

Location-based services, which provide personalised services to the subscriber based on their current position are trying to be made popular by telecom operators. The services are also being combined to provide better service to the subscriber. We will soon be launching a solution where advertisements, inserted into the ext messages of subscribers in exchange for incentives such as tree SMS (other options like free ring tones, reduced tariffs are also being looked at) will be offered to subscriber in both Punjab and Karnataka cirde, "informed MCorp chairman Dr BK Modi.

Giving further details, Saket Aggarwal, COO, Cellebrum (the mobile value- added services company from the Dr BK Modi Group) said: "From May I.

the consumer will be able to use the service, which is optional. We are in talks with big players and assure you that the model will allow advertisement from a Phagwara or Mohali -based company also. "According to him 5 million SMS are sent daily from Spice Telecom subscribers in Punjab, which would increase to 10 million in the days ahead.

The predefined length of the advertisement would be 80 characters a maximum and advertisers would be charged according to he number of subscribers he targets. "Usually the length of the message we send is of 50 characters, so it should not interfere with the messaging," said Mr. Saket.

The industry however, is divided if advertisements enabling free SMS to subscriber would enable an increase in company sales. According to a national telecom service provider official, the freebies are never valued in India as is it in the US or Europe. "The subscriber has to be directly evolved and message has to be personalised. The service will give the subscriber the benefit to have a better shopping experience. cover the concern of the company that the advertisement goes to the targeted individual and provides some additional revenue to the service provider,' said Mr Dheeraj.
